The 72nd Cannes Film Festival is under way, and man, am I excited. No, not for the films. Those will hit Netflix in the next 18-70 months, and I can wait. What I couldn’t wait for? MORE FITS.
See, France’s annual festival doesn’t only bring about the high-caliber films we’ll be talking about an awful lot over the next year or so, it also provides a stage for some of the swaggiest formalwear we’ll see all year. Remember when Ryan Golsing wore a fuckin’ pajama shirt? I’m still thinking about it in the best ways. Cannes is a most opportune time to flex both your personal style and your relationship with capital-F Fashion’s biggest designers, and this year, Rocketman‘s Taron Egerton has found the just-right way to do exactly that.
Egerton’s role as Elton John in the upcoming biopic is a heavy load to carry—not only is Elton a musical legend, he’s also been knighted by the queen, and, most importantly, the guy is draped in the finest Gucci every time you see him out and about. His style legend is untouchable, and so, movie portrayals aside, if Egerton is to rock with the best, he better come correct—and stay in line.
That’s why I love Egerton’s Cannes Gala fit (from Tom Ford) so much. It’s flashy, and it’s not easy to miss—but it doesn’t outshine Sir Elton. A metallic silver dinner jacket is a bold choice for anyone, and Egerton knew he couldn’t step out in Cannes, for a movie where he plays Elton Fucking John, and wear something ordinary. This isn’t Kingsman, this is a king, man. He also follows a style rule just about everyone except Elton John should follow in keeping the rest of his fit relatively streamlined and simple. The jacket stands out, but it’s all that stands out—that’s how it’s done.
In fact, Egerton has kept it low key enough without being low key at all during his time in Cannes with Sir Elton. Just look at these two at a photocall. Sure, Egerton’s suit is downright loud. But it’s not upstaging Sir Elton’s teal Gucci look that, as of this moment, is my new religion. Egerton is complementary, and even feels kind of toned-down when lined up next to Elton’s excellence.
So let’s tip our cap to Taron Egerton. He knows not only what he’s at Cannes for, but who he’s at Cannes for. And he still managed to look damn good.
