Some tramps are born to run—others are born to fight fires. According to an Instagram post, Bruce Springsteen’s youngest son Sam has officially joined the ranks of Jersey City firefighters. Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, posted the announcement on her account Thursday afternoon with the caption “CONGRATULATIONS… You have followed your dreams… JC firefighter… Stay safe.. love your brave heart.”
According to New Jersey News 12, Sam took the civil service exam earlier this year to join the department. He’s also served on several volunteer fire departments throughout New Jersey in recent years before making the leap over to Jersey City. Unlike their famous father, Springsteen’s three kids have decided to lead a less high profile life. Evan, 29, is an XM radio show host. Jessica, 27, is a champion equestrian rider. And now Sam, 25, is officially one of New Jersey’s bravest.
The requirements to join the ranks of firefighters are rigorous, with all qualifying members passing and ranking high on both a physical fitness evaluation, as well as a written test according to the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Just because a candidate passes the qualifying criteria doesn’t particularly mean they’ll rank high enough to enter service.
Fans and family friends, including actress and singer Rita Wilson, sounded off in the comments of Scialfa’s post, sending congratulations to Sam. 2019 has been a big year all around for the Springsteen family. Earlier this year, Springsteen released his nineteenth studio album, Western Stars. Later this year, he will debut a film of the same title at the Toronto International Film Festival.
