Police: Skokie woman posed as landlord on Craigslist to collect security deposits, rent payments

A Skokie woman has been charged with posing as a landlord on Craiglist to improperly collect rent money and security deposits, according to police.

Debra Wasserman, 36, of the 9300 block of Skokie Boulevard, was charged Aug. 10 with three counts of felony theft by deception, according to a news release from Skokie police.

On Aug. 8, Skokie police arrested Wasserman who told multiple people that she was the landlord of a building on the 7900 block of Lamon Ave. and that an apartment was up for rent using the alias “Sarah Goldberg,” police said.

Wasserman provided a lease agreement to several people attempting to rent the property, who then signed the document, police said. The individuals then provided Wasserman with a security deposit or rent, police said.

After paying Wasserman, the individuals attempting to rent the property were unable to reach her, the release said.

When she was arrested, police said it was discovered that she had six outstanding warrants for identity theft, residential burglary, theft and escape.

Skokie police are looking to identify other potential victims in the alleged scheme.

Wasserman appeared for a bond hearing Aug. 11 and was denied bail, according to the release.
