For me, there’s no more unpleasant scenario than being trapped alone with my own thoughts. Given this phobia, I keep a speaker in every room of my one-bedroom apartment, out of fear that I will be briefly without some sort of audio content to stimulate my brain. I have a Sonos speaker in my kitchen, one in the bedroom, and a Sonos Beam connected to my TV. No matter where I happen to go in my apartment, there’s a song or podcast to keep my overactive brain occupied. But what if, heaven forbid, I’m briefly not in the vicinity of something that plays music? Do I hum? Do I talk to myself? The prospect is absolutely chilling. Thankfully, though, Sonos solved this problem for me with its new Move speaker.
Sonos’s first mobile speaker unit, the Move seamlessly connects to my household sound system, but can also work via Bluetooth outside of the house and away from wifi. And since it’s durable, weather resistant, and great sounding, it’s the perfect unit to distract my annoying brain wherever I might need it.
You can truly bring it anywhere.
Before Move, the one place in my apartment I didn’t have a Sonos speaker was the bathroom. I like music when I shower, for reasons outlined above, but I was worried about humidity and steam or potential splashing ruining my nice speaker. But, here’s what I do with Move: I have it in my family room to add some depth to my other speakers, and when I shower, I lift it off its charging station and carry it into the bathroom, where I don’t have to worry about the steam ruining it. It can survive steam, as well as rain, humidity, sand, dust, snow, heat, and cold. So, go ahead and bring it to a rooftop party, to the park, to the beach. Hell, bring it with you to soundtrack an evacuation from a hurricane—Move can handle it. And because it’s drop-resistant, you don’t have to handle it with extreme care. In fact, I’ve knocked mine off my bathroom counter onto the tile, and it’s fine! Move, I assure you, is not precious cargo.
It sounds great—and not just for a mobile speaker.
For a while, my go-to mobile speakers were all tiny beaters that I didn’t care about getting trashed. I’d throw these cheapo things in a bag, forget them at the beach, drop them down the stairs. They were inexpensive and sounded horrible anyway. Now, with Move, I realize how wrong I was to bring such horrible sound with me all the time. This speaker has crisp, clear sound with sharp highs and deep lows. That’s thanks to a pretty advanced unit with two amplifiers and one mid-woofer for mid-ranges and full bass. Whether you’re hosting a big beach party or a classy backyard barbecue, Move has the power to make it sound great, with the audio quality of a full sound system, especially compared to other mobile units.
It’s stupidly easy to use.
Whenever I get a new piece of nice technology, there’s a moment of panic that I’m going to be spending an entire evening trying to figure out how the damn thing works. These experiences age me horribly. But, I kid you not, dear reader, using Move took literally two steps. You plug it in. Then you open the app. It links up with the rest of your Sonos speakers on its own. And when you need to take the thing on the go, you just lift it off the charging base and carry it with you. There’s nothing to plug in, unplug, or reconfigure. And once you get to where you’re going, you just connect it to your mobile device’s Bluetooth like you would any other speaker. Easy.
